Deep red textured cloth hardback with gilt lettering and gilt embossed design/lettering on spine; 491 pages with appendices, index and large foldaway map of London also in Very Fine condition. Originally named "The Antiquities of London", Besant's book offers a street by street historical survey of the metropolis and begins with a tour from the true heart of London in West Chepe. Special emphasis is given to architecture (eg. churches, almshouses, schools), and trade (with its numerous guilds, "selds", "mysteries" and associations) interwoven with the inevitable social history. Besides the slight curling in at the crown and base of spine, the book is virtually flawless. Pages are clean, with gilt edged tops; binding in VG condition. Price:
